In 2016 Waterford Civic trust unveiled a Heritage Blue Plaque at Summerhill Terrace honouring Waterford-born musicians, Mick, Joe and Louis Flanagan, who emigrated to New York in 1911. A decade later the Flanagan Brothers became the most popular Irish performers in the ‘Big Apple ‘and quickly established themselves as the most prolific Irish recording artists of their day. Their first recording was in 1921 and it ushered in what many now refer to as the ‘Golden Age of Irish Music’. The music of the Flanagans was very important to Irish emigrants, providing a link with home and a means of preserving and celebrating Irish culture, history and identity. Their music also helped dispel negative perceptions of the Irish, which were then prevalent in the United States. As a follow up to the Heritage Blue Plaque it was decided to compile a tribute recording of the Flanagan Brothers’ music. This was the idea of celebrated musician Frankie Gavin. This had the support of the Flanagan family in America.
This CD 'By Heck' is the result of this need to celebrate the wonderful legacy of the Flanagan Brothers
