Legendary Irish singer and songwriter Christy Moore has released A Terrible Beauty – The Expanded Edition, on Claddagh Records. The new edition of his chart-topping album includes five additional re-imagined tracks, offering fans a refreshed and richly expanded listening experience. The release is accompanied by a beautiful new lyric video for the Romeo & Juliet–inspired “Sweet Thames Flow Softly,” written by Ewan MacColl.
Five Newly Re-Imagined Tracks Added to the No. 1 Album
Christy’s love for “Sweet Thames Flow Softly” dates back to his time living in Halifax, where a flatmate first introduced him to the song. His deep admiration for its lyricism inspired one of the new expanded recordings:
Took her sailin’ on the river,
Flow, sweet river, flow.
London town was mine to give her,
Sweet Thames Flow Softly.
The expanded edition also features Christy’s recent spoken-word recording “Music To Our Ears,” a poet Johnny Broderick tribute to President Michael D. Higgins, produced by Gavin Murphy.
Speaking on the project, Christy shares:
“I think it is a beautiful tribute to our esteemed President and His Family… Johnny B’s words express what many of us feel about Michael D. and Our First Lady, Sabina.”
A Celebrated Release Following a No. 1 Album
Originally released last November, A Terrible Beauty reached No. 1 on the Official Irish Album Charts, arriving 56 years after Christy’s debut Paddy On The Road and marking his first chart-topper in seven years.
“Boy in the Wild” also appears on the album, with Christy’s son Andy providing backing vocals. Its music video won Best Music Video at the Shark Music Video Awards in London and features Irish actors Liam Cunningham and Ollie West. Remarkably, it is only the second music video Christy Moore has ever released, the first being 1983’s “Don’t Forget Your Shovel.”
