The world-famous Giant´s Causeway (irish: Chlochán an Aifir) on the County Antrim coast is an amazing formation of around 40.000 interlocking basalt columns arising from the sea. Hexagonal in shape and some rising to 12 meters in height, they were created by rapidly cooling lava from a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago.
The Giant´s Causeway is said to have been built by Fionn Mac Cumhaill (or ‘Finn Mac Cool’) when a Scottish giant, Benandonner was threatening to invade Ireland. In a fit of rage, Fionn threw the columns into the sea to create a path to Scotland, where he defeated Benandonner in combat. The Giant´s Causeway is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nearby is the breathtaking Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, which was built by salmon fishermen in 1755 to connect Carrick Island with the mainland. The bridge is 20 meters long and sways 30 meters above the ocean. Crossing it is both thrilling and nerve-wracking.
Also close to the Giant´s Causeway, on the sheer cliffs east of Portrush, is the spectacular Dunluce Castle. Built around 1500 and the site of incredible battles, it is location for Castle Greyjoy in Game of Thrones.
