Malcolm Proud was born in Dublin. Having graduated from Trinity College Dublin he studied at the Conservatoire in Copenhagen, and then with Gustav Leonhardt; since winning first prize at the Edinburgh International Harpsichord Competition in 1982 he has performed throughout western Europe and North America. His concerto appearances have included C P E Bach’s D minor Concerto at the inaugural concert of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment directed by Gustav Leonhardt in London in 1987, and J S Bach’s Concerto for harpsichord, flute and violin with the English Baroque Soloists under John Eliot Gardiner in Zurich in 2000; he also played continuo in Gardiner’s Bach Cantata Pilgrimage. He has performed with soprano Isabelle Poulenard, countertenor Michael Chance, tenor John Elwes, bass Michael George, violinist Monica Huggett, cellist Steven Isserlis, gambist Sarah Cunningham and flautists Lisa Beznosiuk and Rachel Brown. Malcolm is a full-time lecturer in Music at the Waterford Institute of Technology, and organist at the thirteenth-century St Canice’s Cathedral in Kilkenny, Ireland, where he lives with his wife Susan and their three children.
